AZATHIOPRINE
Generic Name : AZATHIOPRINE
ABSTRACT -
Azathioprine is a drug that weakens the immune system of a patient, creating a bodily condition that allows organ transplants to take place. It creates a condition where the body cannot reject the organs introduced into the body. It is generally used during kidney transplants, and is also used to treat rheumatoid arthritis.
DOSAGE –
- It is generally used before or during the course of organ transplants. It is to be handled and administered by medical authorities. Otherwise, the patient is to strictly follow doctor's instructions.
- Blood tests to be conducted before prescription of this drug.
- For Rheumatoid Arthritis, dosage is to be taken on a daily basis until course duration is terminated by the doctor.
- Adult dosages – Tablet: 50mg, 75mg, 100mg

PRECAUTIONS –
- There is a higher risk of developing a type of skin cancer during course. Consult a medical authority prior to prescription. Wear protective clothing and use sunscreen while outdoors.
- Do not administer azathioprine to treat a pregnant patient as it may harm the unborn fetus.
- Notify the doctor incharge of patient's detailed and accurate medical history prior to prescription. In case of liver diseases, chemotherapy drugs, bacterial or fungal infection, or ongoing kidney transplant (if using azathioprine to treat rheumatoid arthritis), consult with the doctor before treatment.
- Do not breastfeed on course as azathioprine transfers through breast milk and may weaken the body.
- Do not administer live vaccines to a patient on the azathioprine course as it may seem the vaccine ineffective.
WARNINGS –
- Azathioprine may cause a rare type of cancer of the liver, spleen and bone marrow. This may be fatal. Notify medical authority in case of Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis.
- Azathioprine affects the immune system to weaken it. Ensure that patient is situated in sanitized environments to avoid easily occurring infections.
- If allergic reaction to azathioprine is observed, contact a medical authority immediately. Allergic reactions may include difficult breathing, hives, swelling of facial areas, etc.
- Azathioprine may lead to severe brain infections or even death. Notify a medical authority immediately if patient encounters problems with speech, vision, thought, dialogue or motor movements.
- Keep azathioprine away from children. In case of overdose, contact a Poison Helpline immediately.
