AZITHROMYCIN

Generic Name : AZITHROMYCIN

ABSTRACT -

Azithromycin is an antibiotic drug that is commonly used to treat bacterial infections of the respiratory system, the skin, the ears or the eyes. It is also used to treat certain sexually transmitted diseases as well. Azithromycin, also known as Zithromax, is well-known and commonly used over the world for its long lasting effects. This drug falls under the category of ‘macrolide antibiotics’.

DOSAGE –

  • Azithromycin is to be taken as prescribed by the doctor. Do not stop course until the doctor’s advised date of termination.
  • Tablets to be taken orally with a whole glass of water.
  • The oral suspension is to be taken on an empty stomach, 1 or 2 hours before a meal. Each dose involves dilution of the medicine with 2 ounces of water, to be consumed immediately.
  • General dosage strengths available –
  • Tablet – 250mg, 500mg, 1g 600mg Oral suspension – 100mg/5mL, 200mg/5mL

SIDE EFFECTS –

  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal Pain
  • Vomiting

RARE SIDE EFFECTS:

  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Blisters, loosening of skin
  • Bloody stool or urine
  • Congestion
  • Severe cough
  • Cough with mucus
  • Dizziness, drowsiness
  • Sore throat
  • Fainting episodes
  • Rapid palpitations
  • Allergic reactions such as itching, rashes, difficulty in breathing or swelling of facial areas

  • Abarelix
  • Abiraterone
  • Acetaminophene

  • Albuterol
  • Aliskiren
  • Lactulose
  • Lopinavir
  • Macimorelin
  • Isoetharine
Azithromycine has 342 moderate interactions with various drugs.

PRECAUTIONS –

  • Notify a medical authority and avoid usage of Azithromycin in case of allergies, usage of certain antibiotics, liver disease, kidney disease or low levels of potassium.
  • Avoid antacids containing aluminium or magnesium within a four hour before-and-after range of a dosage.
  • Prolonged use of azithromycin can lead to irregular heart beat (QT prolongation). This can be severe or fatal and needs to be reported as soon as possible. Symptoms may include – irregular heartbeat, fainting, extreme exhaustion and/or dizziness
  • Wear protective clothing or sunscreen while going outdoors, as Azithromycin can lead to aggravated sunburns.
  • Provide your doctor a detailed and accurate medical history before prescription of any drug.

WARNINGS –

  • In case of sudden diarrhea that is extremely loose or bloody, notify a medical authority – as it may be the sign of a new infection.
  • Keep out of reach of children. In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.
