BETHANECHOL

Generic Name : BETHANECHOL

ABSTRACT -

Bethanechol is pharmacologically and structurally related to acetylcholine. It is a parasympathomimetic type of drug which is given orally and subcutaneously. It is muscarinic agonist used in stimulating the muscarinic receptors with no nicotine effects. It is prescribed to increase smooth muscle tone, in cases of urinary retention.

DOSAGE –

  • Bethanechol has to be taken as directed by the doctor.
  • Prescribed dosage:
  • Tablet: 10mg, 25mg, 50mg
    Liquid: 5mg subcutaneously

SIDE EFFECTS –

  • Facial edema
  • Shortness of breath
  • Wheezing
  • Drowsiness
  • Nausea
  • Flushing
  • Teary eyes
  • Cardiac arrhythmias
  • Abdominal discomfort

RARE SIDE EFFECTS:

  • Bronchial constrictions
  • Increased gastric motility
  • Hypotension

SHORT-TERM EFFECTS:

  • The patient may faint frequently.
  • The weakness may persist and the patient might encounter chest pain.

LONG-TERM EFFECTS:

  • Treatment for long term helps in the betterment of cerebral palsy.
  • It may also enhance neural signaling.
  • Long term consummation of drug can cause coronary artery disease.

DRUG INTERACTIONS –

  • Amoxapine
  • Ambenonium chloride
  • Atropine
  • Benztropine
  • Dicyclomine
  • Edrophonium
  • Flavoxate
  • Galantamine
  • Glycopyrrolate
  • Hyoscyamine
  • Neostigmine

MILD INTERACTIONS OF BETHANECHOL ARE:

  • Acetaminophen
  • Bupropion
  • Carbetapentane
  • Carbinoxamine
  • Cetrizine
  • Loperamide
  • Ibuprofen
  • Norepinephrine
  • Pralidoxime

PRECAUTIONS –

  • Do not take the drug intravenously or intramuscular.
  • Get the thyroid levels tested at intervals.
  • When tremors are encountered, consult a doctor for medication.

WARNINGS –

  • Do not stop the drug abruptly.
  • Keep a check on the blood pressure regularly to avoid hypotension and keep the glucose handy.
  • Avoid heavy work post-surgery and post-partum.
  • Consult the doctor if the pain remains for long.
  • Keep out of reach of children. In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.
