Generic Name : CALCITRIOL (VITAMIN D3/TOPICAL)
ABSTRACT -
Calcitriol is a vitamin supplement for vitamin D3. It is a vitamin drug that is used to treat hyperparathyroidism, metabolic bone diseases in patients that suffer from chronic kidney failure or hypocalcemia in patients that are receiving dialysis. This vitamin aids the absorption of calcium from various intestinal parts of the body. The topical form of this drug is used to treat plaque psoriasis in adults.
DOSAGE –

- Calcitrol is to be taken as directed by the doctors. Consume this drug only as prescribed to avoid overdose or other harmful effects.
- Topical form of this drug must be applied once in the morning and then in the evening, as a thin later over the affected skin.

PRECAUTIONS –
- Provide the doctor with a detailed and accurate medical history prior to drug prescription.
- Do not use this drug in case of an allergy to Calcitriol itself, or in case of high levels of calcium/Vitamin D in the blood.
- Avoid using the topical form of this drug in case of severe forms of psoriasis.
- This drug (topical) is not to be applied on the face, healthy areas of the skin or the vaginal area. Avoid covering affected areas.
- Inform the doctor of all the drugs being consumed so as to avoid severe drug interactions.
- This drug can harm a baby in case of nursing or pregnancy. Consult a doctor for the use of this drug during feeding and gestation.
- Drink plenty of fluids while on drug course.
- Cooperate with regular blood tests to measure the efficiency of this drug.
- Follow the special diet routine that accompanies the drug, for best results.
- Avoid other vitamin supplements or antacids while on drug course, unless advised.
- Avoid exposing skin to tanning beds or sunlight. The topical form of this drug may lead to sunburn easily.
WARNINGS –
- Keep out of reach of children. This drug is not recommended for anyone under the age of 18.
- This drug can affect the patient’s bodily ability to metabolize calcium, and may cause hypercalcemia. Contact a doctor immediately in case of heightened thirst, nausea or lack of appetite.
- Contact a doctor immediately in case of severe vomiting, diarrhea or abnormal amounts of sweating.
- In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.
