CLINDAMYCIN

Generic Name : CLINDAMYCIN (ORAL/INJECTION/TOPICAL)

ABSTRACT -

Clindamycin is an antibiotic drug that is used to treat bacterial infections of a serious magnitude. It works by fighting against bacteria that are responsible for the infection; and is used in place of weaker antibiotics. The topical form is this drug is used to treat severe facial acne in children as young as 12 years old.

DOSAGE –

  • Clindamycin is to be taken as directed by the doctors.
  • The oral capsule is to be consumed with a full glass of water
  • The injection is to be administered into muscle, or as infusion into the vein
  • Topical foam is to be applied only on skin.
  • General Adult Dosage available:
  • Oral capsule – 75mg, 300mg
    Oral liquid solution – 75mg/5mL, 150mg/mL
    Injection – 300mg-5%/50mL, 600mg-5%/50mL
    Topical foam (strength) – 100mg, 1%, 2%

SIDE EFFECTS –

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Stomach pain
  • Mild skin rash
  • Vaginal discharge
  • Oily skin/milk irritation at site (topical)
  • RARE SIDE EFFECTS:

  • Bloody diarrhea
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Metallic taste in the mouth after injection
  • Severe rashes, itching of skin (topical)

DRUG INTERACTIONS –

  • BCG
  • Cholera vaccine
  • Typhoid vaccine
  • Clindamycin has major interactions with 3 different drugs.


    MODERATE DRUG INTERACTIONS –

  • Cyclosporine
  • Erythromycin
  • Estradiol
  • Gentamicin
  • Kaolin
  • Mivacurium
  • Rapacuronium
  • Verapamil
  • Cindamycin has moderate interactions with 25 different drugs.

PRECAUTIONS –

  • Provide the doctor with detailed and accurate medical history prior to drug prescription. Notify especially in case of a history of liver/kidney disease, intestinal disorders, asthmatic conditions, eczema or allergic skin reactions.
  • Notify beforehand in case of a surgery, as this drug may interact with anesthesia or other drugs to be used for the purpose of the surgery.
  • Do not use the topical foam over open wounds or inflamed areas.
  • Avoid smoking while using the foam, or immediately after administering.
  • Do not use erythromycin while on drug course.
  • Do not consume this medicine in case of an allergy to the drug.
  • In case the patient is using the topical foam while nursing, she is to avoid applying the foam over areas that may come in contact with the baby’s mouth.

WARNINGS –

  • This drug cannot be used to treat viral infections.
  • The injection form of this drug may be lethal to newborns. Do not use this drug for children unless recommended by a medical professional.
  • This drug can sometimes lead to severe diarrhea which may be bloody and painful in nature. Contact an emergency helpline immediately if the symptom worsens.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.
