Generic Name : EPINEPHRINE INJECTION
ABSTRACT -
Epipen is used as an injection to treat the various symptoms of severe allergic reaction caused due to insect’s bites, stings, drugs, food poisoning. It contains the chemical called epinephrine which helps in narrowing blood vessels to expand airways in the lungs for better breathing. The drug immediately improves low blood pressure, itching or hives, wheezing and other consequences of allergic reactions. The injection is also used to treat exercise-induces allergic reactions (anaphylaxis).
DOSAGE –
-
- EpiPen has to be taken as directed by the doctors.
- The dosage varies with the body weight of the patient.
SIDE EFFECTS –
- Abnormal or decreased touch sensation
- Anxiety
- Arm, back, or jaw pain
- Bleeding and discoloration of the skin
- Infection, inflammation, itching on skin
- Blurred vision
- Chest pain or discomfort
- Chest tightness
- Cold, pale, or bluish color of the fingers or toes
- Dizziness
- Faintness
- Fast, slow, irregular heartbeats
- Fear or nervousness
- Headache
- Nausea
- Numbness, tingling, or pain in the fingers
- Restlessness
- Shakiness in the legs, arms, hands, or feet
- Stroke
- Sweating
- Trembling or shaking of the hands or feet
- Trouble in breathing
- Unusual tiredness or weakness
- Vomiting

PRECAUTIONS –
- Pharmacist must be consulted before the consumption of this drug as it contains components and inactive ingredients which may lead to allergic reactions.
- The patient should beforehand discuss any medical history related to high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes or thyroid.
- Since this drug makes a person dizzy so activities like driving and others which needs more attention should be avoided.
- The injection must be kept in-hand for emergency purpose by the person who has history of allergic reactions.
PREGNANCY AND LACTATION WITH EPIPEN:
- Use of EpiPen in pregnancy may be acceptable only if the benefits exceed the risks involved.
- Studies in animal pregnancy have shown adverse effects on fetus. But no adequate studies have been found in humans to access the damage involved.
- Do not nurse while on drug course, as this drug may transfer through breast milk and may harm a newborn.
WARNINGS –
- Keep out of reach of children. While giving this drug to elders, the risk of heart disease arises as the medication increases the blood pressure.
- Overdose symptoms include passing out, trouble breathing, blurry vision and irregular heartbeat.
- In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.
