PEPTIC ULCERS

ABSTRACT -

Peptic Ulcers are painful inflammations that can occur in the lining of the stomach and is called gastric ulcer and when it appears on the upper portion of small intestine, it is known as duodenal ulcer. Diet plays an important role in this condition because certain food can give relief and some can make it worst. Ulcer pain can appear anywhere in the digestive system and might last for long which often becomes severe while sleeping. Although, it is a very common and curable condition.

CAUSES -

  • Over consumption of OTC Medications
  • Reduced levels of mucous (layer on digestive tract that protects against acid)
  • Helicobacter pylori bacteria in the stomach

SIGNS AND SYMTOMS –

  • Loss of appetite which leads to weight loss
  • Nausea and severe vomiting
  • Stomach pain
  • Burning sensation in heart and stomach

COMPLICATIONS –

  • Internal bleeding
  • Severe infection in abdominal cavity like Peritonitis
  • Chronic inflammation in the lining of the stomach or duodenum
  • Blockage of food passage

DIAGNOSIS –

  • Physical Examination
  • Endoscopy
  • Biopsy
  • Upper Gastrointestinal X-Ray

TREATMENT –

Antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications for:

  • Protecting the lining of the stomach and small intestine
  • Neutralizing the acid
  • Destroying the bacteria that is causing ulcer

RISK FACTORS –

  • Ageing
  • Spicy food consumption
  • Smoking and alcohol abuse
  • Over consumption of OTC medications

PREVENTION –

  • Quit smoking and avoid alcohol consumption
  • Consume less spicy diet or light food
  • Limit the intake of pain relievers

EPIDEMIOLOGY –

  • According to the study, the prevalence rate for this condition has been found to be 4.1% to 19.5% worldwide.
  • The estimation shows that 95% of the duodenal ulcer and 70% of the gastric ulcer occurs because of the peptic ulcers bacteria.
