PROSTATITIS
ABSTRACT -
Prostatitis is an inflammation of a prostate gland which is located below the bladder in males. Prostate gland is responsible to produce semen and urethra carries urine which passes through prostate hence it affects both the sexual and urinary functions. Chronic Prostatitis develops gradually and can last for 3 months and more.
CAUSES -
Cause of Prostatitis is not identified yet but following can increase the chances of getting affected:
- Common strains of bacteria
- Urinary tract infections
- Damage of nerve in urinary tract
- Psychological stress
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS-
- Pain or burning sensation while urination
- Severe pelvic or genital pain
- Frequent and urgent urination
- Pain in the perineum
- Flu like symptoms such as fever, chills, nausea or vomiting
- Pain and difficulty while ejaculation
COMPLICATIONS-
- Bacterial infection in the blood (Bacteremia)
- Epididymitis
- Prostatic Abscess
- Semen Abnormalities
- Infertility
DIAGNOSIS –
- Sample testing of blood, urine and semen
- Prostate Biopsy
- Cystoscopy
- X-ray, CT Scan and ultrasound of the prostate or urethra
TREATMENT –
- Medications: Antibiotics, Alpha Blockers, Anti-inflammatory Drugs
- Surgery
- Therapy for stress management
RISK FACTORS –
- Bladder or urethral infections
- Pelvic trauma or injury
- HIV / AIDS
- Undergoing prostate biopsy
- Inflammatory mediators
- Stress
EPIDEMIOLOGY –
- Young or middle aged males are majorly affected from this condition globally.
- Males suffering from sexually transmitted diseases are at major risk of developing Prostatitis.
