LEPTOSPIROSIS

ABSTRACT -

Leptospirosis is an uncommon bacterial skin infection in which animals as well as human beings get affected due to contaminated water or soil. This condition is caused by Leptospira genus of bacteria. It can lead to some complications such as Weil's disease or Meningitis which are life threatening. It is not contagious in humans as it cannot be transmitted from one person to another person but there are chances it can spread from animals to humans.

CAUSES -

  • Leptospira bacteria - This bacteria resides in the kidney of many animals which gets excreted out in water or soil through their urine. Skin cuts or wounds are vulnerable to get affected from this bacteria.
  • Contaminated soil or water

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS -

  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Fever and chills
  • Coughing
  • Headache
  • Redness and irritation in eyes
  • Jaundice
  • Muscle pain
  • Skin rash

COMPLICATIONS –

Severity of this condition can lead to following complications:
  • Liver or kidney failure
  • Meningitis
  • Encephalitis
  • Weil’s disease
  • Other brain or spinal cord disorders

DIAGNOSIS -

  • Physical examination
  • Blood test
  • Urine test

TREATMENT -

  • Farmers
  • Veterinarian
  • Workers of slaughtering house
  • Military personnel
  • Underground workers

EPIDEMIOLOGY -

  • Estimation shows that, over1 million people gets affected from Leptospirosis worldwide every year.
