TESTICULAR CANCER
ABSTRACT -
Testicular cancer affects the testicles (testes) of a male located inside the scrotum which is a loose bag of skin underneath the penis. Testicles produces male sex hormones and sperm for reproduction. Even though it’s a cancer, it is treatable and very rare as compared to other cancers.
CAUSES -
Causes of testicular cancer are unknown but it can be due to abnormalities in cell development.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS –
- Painless lump, enlargement or swelling in the testicles
- Sensation of heaviness and discomfort in scrotum
- Unexpected accumulation of fluid in scrotum
- Slight persistent pain in lower back, groin or abdomen
- Tiredness and fatigue
- Enlargement or tenderness of chest
DIAGNOSIS –
- Testicular Ultrasound
- CT Scan
- Blood Test
- Testicular Biopsy
TREATMENT –
- Radiation therapy
- Chemotherapy
- Surgery involves Orchiectomy and Lymph Node Removal
RISK FACTORS –
- Cryptorchidism (Undescended Testicle)
- Hernia in the groin
- Abnormal development of testicles
- Congenital abnormalities
- Family history
EPIDEMIOLOGY –
- Among all types of cancers prominently affecting males, this cancer accounts for 1% out of total male population worldwide.
- Males with age group of 20-34 are more prone to get affected with testicular cancer.
