TOXOPLASMOSIS
ABSTRACT -
Toxoplasmosis is an infection occurs due to Toxoplasma gondii, a single-celled parasite which results in flu-like symptoms. Healthy and non-pregnant patients do not require treatment but for others, this condition can lead to severe complications. Congenital toxoplasmosis can develop hearing loss, mental disabilities and blindness in children.
CAUSES -
- Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) parasite
- Contaminated food or water
- Eating improperly cooked food
- Using contaminated knife, utensils or cutting boards
- Eating unwashed fruits and vegetables
- Infected cat’s feces
- Transmission from mother to child in the womb
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS –
- Body pain
- Headache
- Inflamed lymph nodes
- Fever
- Fatigue
- Lung infection
- Seizures
- Vision problems
- Jaundice
COMPLICATIONS –
- Eye infections
- Encephalitis
- Impaired vision
- Mental Infirmities
- Hearing Impairment
DIAGNOSIS –
- Blood Test
- MRI
- Ultrasound Scan
- Amniocentesis (for fetus)
- Brain Biopsy (In serious conditions)
TREATMENT –
- Medication: Folic Acid Antagonist and Antibiotics
RISK FACTORS –
- HIV / AIDS
- Pregnancy
- Low immunity
PREVENTIONS –
- Avoid eating undercooked food
- Wash all cooking utensils properly
- Use washed and clean fruits and vegetables
- Don’t drink unpasteurized milk
EPIDEMIOLOGY –
- Toxoplasmosis is currently becoming a global threat as it infects 30–50% of the world human population every year.
