Plant in California Provides Hope in Alzheimer treatment

Salk Institute researchers have identified a potent neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory chemical in a native Californian plant shrub that can lead to Alzheimer's treatment. The plant, 'Yerba Santa', meaning "holy herb" in Spanish, has been used to treat respiratory ailments, fever, headache etc for a long time. The potent chemical is Sterubin which impacts on microglia and is more active than other flavonoids. It is also an effective iron remover since iron could cause nerve damage and neurodegenerative diseases. It was found effective against multiple nerve cell death inducers. Now its characteristics and toxicity in animals is being checked before humans trials.
