ABCIXIMAB
Generic Name: ABCIXIMAB
ABSTRACT -
Abciximab is a chimeric Fab fragment that binds platelet glycoprotein IIb/IIIa receptors and inhibits platelet aggregation. It has been used as adjunctive therapy during percutaneous coronary intervention.
DOSAGE –
Typical PCI regimen: 0.25 mg/kg intravenous bolus before PCI followed by 0.125 microgram/kg/min infusion, maximum 10 micrograms/min, for 12 hours, with aspirin and heparin according to protocol.
SIDE EFFECTS –
- Bleeding
- Hypotension
- Nausea or vomiting
- Back pain
- Headache
- Chest pain
- Fever
- Thrombocytopenia
ALLRGIC REACTIONS–
(These symptoms may indicate an allergic reaction and require medical attention.)
- Anaphylaxis or severe hypersensitivity
- Urticaria
- Bronchospasm or dyspnea
- Hypotension with allergic symptoms
DRUG INTERACTIONS -
- Heparin, thrombolytics, anticoagulants, antiplatelet drugs, and NSAIDs increase bleeding risk
- Avoid unnecessary invasive procedures during treatment
- Concomitant drugs affecting hemostasis require careful review
PRECAUTIONS –
- Check platelet counts before and after administration
- Use strict vascular access-site management
- Avoid in active internal bleeding or recent major bleeding risks
- Have platelet transfusion/supportive care plans available
WARNINGS –
- Major bleeding and thrombocytopenia can occur
- Risk increases with excessive anticoagulation or thrombolytic therapy
- Discontinued/availability varies by market
