AMOPYROQUINE

Generic Name: AMOPYROQUINE

ABSTRACT -

Amopyroquine is a 4-aminoquinoline Mannich-base antimalarial compound developed to treat malaria, including strains of Plasmodium falciparum with reduced chloroquine susceptibility. It is structurally related to quinoline antimalarials and is thought to interfere with parasite haem detoxification within the digestive vacuole. Its modern clinical availability is limited and use should follow specialist malaria guidance.

DOSAGE -

Dosage should be determined only by a qualified healthcare professional.

No widely used contemporary standard regimen is established in many markets.

Use should follow local malaria guidelines, susceptibility data, and product-specific labeling where available.

Dose selection must consider age, body weight, species of malaria, severity, pregnancy status, and hepatic or cardiac risk.

SIDE EFFECTS–

  • Possible side effects include:
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Pruritus
  • Rash
  • Visual disturbance
  • Cardiac conduction or QT-related effects
  • Liver enzyme abnormalities or blood dyscrasias are possible antimalarial class concerns.

ALLRGIC REACTIONS–

  • Hypersensitivity to amopyroquine or related quinoline antimalarials may occur.
  • Symptoms may include rash, urticaria, facial swelling, bronchospasm, or severe skin reactions.
  • Important: Patients with allergic symptoms should seek urgent care and avoid re-exposure unless evaluated by a specialist.

DRUG INTERACTIONS–

  • Avoid combination with other QT-prolonging medicines unless supervised.
  • Use caution with other antimalarials, macrolides, fluoroquinolones, antipsychotics, and antiarrhythmics.
  • Hepatotoxic medicines and drugs affecting quinoline metabolism may increase risk.
  • Patients should report all medicines and supplements.

PREAUTIONS–

  • Assess cardiac history and consider ECG monitoring in at-risk patients.
  • Use caution in hepatic impairment, retinal disease, epilepsy, and pregnancy.
  • Confirm malaria species and regional resistance before therapy.
  • Monitor for treatment failure and severe malaria complications.

WARNINGS –

  • Improper antimalarial therapy can be life-threatening and promote resistance.
  • Do not use without medical diagnosis and specialist guidance.
  • Seek urgent care for syncope, palpitations, visual changes, severe rash, or worsening malaria symptoms.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
