Generic Name: CAMICINAL
ABSTRACT -
Camicinal (GSK962040) is a selective, orally active motilin receptor agonist developed by GlaxoSmithKline for gastroparesis and delayed gastric emptying. Motilin receptors on GI smooth muscle and enteric neurons mediate migrating motor complexes; agonism accelerates gastric emptying. Phase II trials investigated it in patients with diabetic gastroparesis with evidence of symptom improvement and enhanced gastric emptying.
DOSAGE -
Oral tablet; 25–150 mg three times daily was studied in Phase II trials; specific therapeutic dose pending Phase III determination.
SIDE EFFECTS -
- Abdominal cramping
- Diarrhoea
- Nausea
- Headache
- Borborygmi (gut sounds)
ALLERGIC REACTIONS -
These symptoms may indicate an allergic reaction and require immediate medical attention.

- Urticaria
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Angioedema (rare)
DRUG INTERACTIONS-
- CYP3A4 substrates — motilin agonists alter gastric emptying rate affecting oral drug absorption
- Anti-diabetic drug dosing may need adjustment as glucose absorption timing changes
- Anticholinergics antagonise motilin receptor agonist effect
PREAUTONS–
- Gastroparesis diagnosis must be confirmed by objective gastric emptying testing
- Caution in complete mechanical obstruction — do not use prokinetics
- Diabetes management requires reassessment of insulin/drug timing with faster gastric emptying
- Not studied in severe renal or hepatic impairment
WARNINGS –
- Motilin receptor desensitisation with chronic use — efficacy may diminish
- Not approved — use only in clinical trial setting
- GI cramping may be bothersome; dose adjustment may be needed
