CADROFLOXACIN

Generic Name: CADROFLOXACIN

ABSTRACT -

Cadrofloxacin is a novel-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic with enhanced activity against respiratory pathogens including drug-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus. It inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, blocking DNA replication. It is being evaluated for community-acquired bacterial pneumonia (CABP) and acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSI).

DOSAGE -

Oral or intravenous formulations under evaluation; once-daily dosing regime being studied in Phase II/III clinical trials.

SIDE EFFECTS - 

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhoea
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • QTc prolongation

ALLERGIC REACTIONS -

These symptoms may indicate an allergic reaction and require immediate medical attention.

  • Skin rash
  • Photosensitivity reactions
  • Drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS)
  • Anaphylaxis

DRUG INTERACTIONS-

  • Divalent cations (antacids, iron, zinc) impair absorption — separate by 2 hours
  • QTc prolongation risk with antiarrhythmics, antipsychotics, macrolides
  • NSAIDs may lower seizure threshold in combination with fluoroquinolones

PREAUTONS–

  • Avoid in patients with known QT prolongation or hypokalaemia
  • Tendon rupture risk — especially in elderly and corticosteroid users
  • CNS adverse effects may impair driving ability
  • Avoid in pregnancy — cartilage toxicity in developing joints

WARNINGS –

  • Aortic aneurysm and dissection risk — class fluoroquinolone warning
  • Tendinitis and tendon rupture — discontinue at first sign of tendon pain
  • Peripheral neuropathy — may be irreversible; discontinue if symptoms develop
