EFAVIRENZ
Generic Name: EFAVIRENZ
ABSTRACT -
Efavirenz is an NNRTI antiretroviral used in combination HIV therapy. It inhibits HIV-1 reverse transcriptase and must not be used as monotherapy.
DOSAGE -
Use current HIV guideline and product-label dosing, typically as part of a combination regimen. Adjustments and alternatives depend on age, weight, pregnancy status, resistance, and interactions.
SIDE EEFECTS -
- Dizziness, abnormal dreams, insomnia, or somnolence
- Rash
- Nausea or diarrhea
- Elevated liver enzymes
- Mood changes or neuropsychiatric symptoms
ALLERGIC REACTIONS -
These symptoms may indicate an allergic reaction and require medical attention.
- Severe rash, Stevens-Johnson syndrome-like reactions, urticaria, angioedema, or anaphylaxis
DRUG INTEACTIONS-
- Potent CYP inducer/inhibitor interactions affect many antiretrovirals, azoles, anticonvulsants, rifamycins, and hormonal contraceptives
- Alcohol/CNS-active drugs may worsen neuropsychiatric effects
- Do not combine with contraindicated CYP-sensitive medicines
PREAUTONS–
- Review HIV resistance, pregnancy, psychiatric history, liver disease, and full medication list
- Monitor viral load, liver tests, rash, and CNS symptoms
- Use effective combination therapy only
WARNINGS –
Serious psychiatric symptoms, severe rash, hepatotoxicity, drug interactions, and embryo-fetal risk concerns require careful review
