ANAMORELIN
Generic Name: ANAMORELIN
ABSTRACT -
Anamorelin is an orally active ghrelin receptor (GHS-R1a) agonist used in Japan for cancer cachexia associated with selected malignancies and investigated elsewhere for anorexia-cachexia syndromes. It stimulates appetite pathways and growth-hormone/IGF-1 signaling, supporting increased food intake, lean body mass, and body weight in appropriately selected patients.
DOSAGE -
- Dosage should be determined only by a qualified healthcare professional.
- Where approved, the adult Japanese label uses anamorelin hydrochloride 100 mg orally once daily in the fasting state for specified cancer-cachexia indications.
- Treatment should be reassessed if appetite, weight, or functional benefit is not achieved.
- Baseline cardiac risk, glucose control, hepatic function, and concomitant medicines should be reviewed before prescribing.
SIDE EFFECTS–
- Possible side effects include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting or abdominal discomfort
- Hyperglycemia or worsened diabetes control
- Peripheral edema
- Fatigue
- Dizziness
- Liver enzyme elevations
- Potential QT-interval or rhythm concerns in susceptible patients
ALLRGIC REACTIONS–
- Possible allergic reaction symptoms include:
- Rash
- Urticaria
- Facial, lip, tongue, or throat swelling
- Wheezing or breathing difficulty
- Severe dizziness or collapse
- Important: Patients who develop an allergic reaction to Anamorelin should seek immediate medical attention and inform all future healthcare providers of the allergy.
DRUG INTERACTIONS–
- QT-prolonging medicines may increase cardiac rhythm risk.
- Antidiabetic therapy may require adjustment due to hyperglycemia risk.
- Strong CYP3A modulators may alter anamorelin exposure.
- Other appetite stimulants or hormonal agents should be used only with careful clinical review.
- Patients should inform healthcare providers about all prescription medicines, over-the-counter medicines, herbal products, vaccines, and supplements they are using.
PREAUTIONS–
- Use only for a medically assessed cachexia indication; it is not a simple weight-gain supplement.
- Monitor weight, appetite, edema, glucose, liver tests, and cardiac risk factors.
- Use caution in significant hepatic impairment, uncontrolled diabetes, or serious cardiac disease.
- Continue nutritional, oncologic, and palliative-care management alongside drug treatment.
WARNINGS –
- Do not use without medical supervision.
- Stop and seek urgent care for severe hypersensitivity, syncope, arrhythmia symptoms, severe edema, or marked hyperglycemia.
- Benefit should be reviewed regularly and therapy stopped if ineffective or unsafe.
- Keep out of reach of children.
