APRAGLUTIDE
Generic Name: APRAGLUTIDE
ABSTRACT -
Apraglutide is a long-acting glucagon-like peptide-2 (GLP-2) analog developed for short bowel syndrome with intestinal failure.
It is designed to improve intestinal absorption and reduce parenteral support requirements through GLP-2 receptor activation.
Regulatory approval had not been established in the United States at the time of preparation, and further confirmatory study requirements have been reported.
DOSAGE -
- Dosage should be determined only by a qualified healthcare professional.
- Clinical trials have evaluated once-weekly subcutaneous dosing.
- No approved standard dosing regimen is established unless a local regulatory label becomes available.
- Monitor intestinal-fluid balance, stoma output, weight, and parenteral support needs according to protocol.
SIDE EFFECTS–
- Possible side effects may include:
- Abdominal pain or distension
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Injection-site reaction
- Fluid overload or edema
- Stoma complications
- Headache
- Potential intestinal polyp or neoplasia monitoring concern by class
ALLERGIC REACTIONS -
- Hypersensitivity to the active biologic or formulation excipients is possible.
- Symptoms may include rash, urticaria, pruritus, facial swelling, bronchospasm, fever, chills, hypotension, or anaphylaxis.
- Patients with a suspected allergic reaction should stop treatment and seek urgent medical attention.
DRUG INTERACTIONS–
- Improved intestinal absorption may alter exposure to oral medicines.
- Fluid-retaining medicines may increase edema risk.
- Adjust parenteral fluids and electrolytes under specialist supervision.
PREAUTIONS–
- Screen and monitor for gastrointestinal malignancy or polyps according to GLP-2 class guidance and protocol.
- Use caution in biliary, pancreatic, or intestinal obstruction disorders.
- Monitor hydration, electrolytes, liver tests, and fluid status.
- Pregnancy and lactation safety are not established.
WARNINGS –
- Not approved for routine use in some jurisdictions.
- Potential for fluid overload and gastrointestinal growth effects requires monitoring.
- Use only under intestinal-failure specialist supervision.
