ABATACEPT
Generic Name: ABATACEPT
ABSTRACT -
Abatacept is a selective T-cell costimulation modulator. It binds CD80/CD86 on antigen-presenting cells and blocks the CD28 costimulatory signal needed for full T-cell activation.
DOSAGE –
Adults: intravenous infusion is weight-tiered at weeks 0, 2, and 4, then every 4 weeks; subcutaneous regimen is commonly 125 mg once weekly. Pediatric and indication-specific regimens vary.
SIDE EFFECTS –
- Headache
- Upper respiratory tract infection
- Nasopharyngitis
- Nausea
- Infusion-related reaction
- Injection-site reaction
ALLRGIC REACTIONS–
(These symptoms may indicate an allergic reaction and require medical attention.)
- Anaphylaxis or serious hypersensitivity
- Hives or rash
- Swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat
- Breathing difficulty
DRUG INTERACTIONS -
- Avoid use with TNF antagonists or other biologic DMARDs unless specifically directed
- Live vaccines should be avoided during treatment and for a period after discontinuation
- Immunosuppressants increase infection risk
PRECAUTIONS –
- Screen for infections including TB as clinically indicated
- Use caution in recurrent infections or COPD
- Update immunizations before therapy when possible
- Monitor for signs of serious infection
WARNINGS –
- Serious infections including fatal infections can occur
- Hypersensitivity reactions including anaphylaxis are possible
- Concurrent potent biologic immunosuppression can increase adverse events
