IMPETIGO
ABSTRACT -
Impetigo is common but contagious skin infection which appears as red sores. It usually affects infants and children. Sores can turn into honey colored crusts and generally appears on child’s face, nose, mouth, hands and feet. It is caused by Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria.
CAUSES -
- Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Streptococcus pyogenes (S. pyogenes) bacteria enters through cut or wound.
- It can spread from an infected person to a healthy individual.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS –
- Ruptured or burst red sores
- Sores oozing before getting dry
COMPLICATIONS-
- Cellulitis
- Kidney problems
- Scarlet fever
- Scarring
DIAGNOSIS –
- Physical examination
- Testing of liquid sample collected from sores
TREATMENT –
- Antibiotic ointment or cream
- Oral antibiotic medications
RISK FACTORS –
- Age: It generally affects children with age group of 2-5 years
- Crowded places
- Warm and humid weather
- Cut or wounds
PREVENTIONS –
- Keep the wound clean and covered
- Don’t share infected person’s clothes, comb, toys and towel etc
- Maintain personal hygiene
- Keep the infected child’s nails trimmed
EPIDEMIOLOGY –
- Worldwide prevalence of Impetigo has been found to be approximately162 million people out of which major are children.
