ROSACEA

ABSTRACT -

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition commonly seen in the fair skinned women. It causes redness and makes blood vessels visible on the face and can also produce small, red and pus-filled bumps sometimes. Although the condition is not curable, it can be still controlled by various treatments. It is a common disease which worsens if left untreated.

CAUSES -

  • High consumption of spicy food, caffeine and dairy products
  • Smoking and alcohol abuse
  • Excessive cosmetics application
  • Allergy due to sunlight, wind and humidity
  • Forceful and exhaustive exercises
  • Hereditary factors

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS –

  • Redness on the face
  • Swollen and pus-filled bumps
  • Nose inflammation
  • Eye conditions like dryness, irritation and reddened eyelids

COMPLICATIONS –

  • Inflamed cheeks
  • Rhinophyma: A condition wherein there is tissue buildup around the nose
  • Swollen sebaceous glands (inside the nose)

DIAGNOSIS –

There are no specific tests to diagnose Rosacea but the following can help:

  • Physical examination
  • Eye test if eyes are affected
  • Tests to diagnose other different skin conditions like acne, eczema or psoriasis since these also show same kind of symptoms.

TREATMENT –

  • Creams and ointments
  • Skin care routine
  • Medications like antibiotics for reducing the symptoms
  • Therapies like Light Therapy and Electrosurgery

RISK FACTORS –

  • Genetics and hereditary factors
  • Fair skin
  • Ageing
  • Smoking

PREVENTION –

  • Treat skin gently and keep it clean
  • Be aware of allergies and allergens to skin and try to stay away
  • Use sunscreen to protect skin from sunlight
  • Avoid low quality makeup products

EPIDEMIOLOGY –

  • Estimation shows that the prevalence rate of this condition is 2 to 22% in the fair skinned population.
  • It’s a very common condition treated according to the level of severity.
