BACTROBAN
Generic Name : MUPIROCIN (TOPICAL/NASAL)
ABSTRACT -
Bactroban is an antibiotic drug that is generally applied as an ointment over affected areas on the skin to prevent the growth of bacteria. It is generally used to treat bacterial skin infections such as impetigo. A nasal ointment is separately available for bacterial infections within the nasal passage.
DOSAGE –
- This drug is to be taken as directed by the doctors, even after symptoms improve.
- Apply ointment as needed. Generally applied 3 times a day for 10 days.
- Apply nasal ointment cautiously in the nasal passage.
- General Cream Dosage available: Muciprocin Calcium – 20mg in 1g
SIDE EFFECTS –
- Burning sensation
- Itching in skin
- Slight pain or stinging
RARE SIDE EFFECTS:
- Severe diarrhea
- Bloody discharge
- Peeling of skin
- Blisters
DRUG INTERACTIONS –
Bactroban does not interact with any drugs that one needs to be cautious about.
PRECAUTIONS –
- Apply Bactroban only at targeted areas. Do not let Bactroban affect other facial or sensitive areas. Wash these areas in case ointment accidentally gets applied there.
- Notify the doctor in case patient has a kidney disease or is allergic to mupirocin.
- In case, if there is a need of covering affected area, use a sanitized gauze pad instead of other material.
- Bactroban should not be administered for infants under 2 months.
- Wash hands before and after applying Bactroban.
- Do not spread the cream over larger areas of skin.
WARNINGS –
- Keep out of reach of children.
- Overdose of Bactroban is unlikely, but in case one swallows the whole ointment, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.
