CARAFATE
Generic Name : SUCRALFATE (ORAL)
ABSTRACT -
Carafate is a GI tract agent which works within the digestive tract by sticking to the linings of the stomach where there are ulcer sites. Used to treat duodenal ulcers, Carafate resists absorption and protects ulcer sites from bile salts, acids and enzymes. This drug treats active ulcers to an extent, but is more often used as a preventive medication to avoid worsening of internal ulcers.
DOSAGE –

- Carafate is to be taken as directed by the doctors. Consume this drug only as prescribed to avoid overdose or other harmful effects.
- This drug is to be consumed while on an empty stomach.
- This drug may take up to 2-8 weeks for full effects to be observed. Course duration generally ends by 8 weeks.

PRECAUTIONS –
- Provide the doctor with a detailed and accurate medical history prior to drug prescription. Notify especially in case of illnesses and conditions such as kidney disease, diabetic conditions or trouble swallowing tablets.
- Do not use this drug in case of an allergy to Carafate itself.
- Inform the doctor of all the drugs being consumed so as to avoid severe drug interactions. Do not take any other medicines within the 2 hours after taking Carafate, as this drug causes difficulty in absorbing other medications taken immediately after.
- Cooperate with regular blood sugar tests to ensure regular health.
- Avoid using antacids unless recommended by the doctor.
WARNINGS –
- Keep out of reach of children. This drug is not approved for any individual under the age of 18.
- Strictly avoid injecting the liquid solution of this drug through a needle, as it can cause sudden death.
- In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.
