CHANTIX

Generic Name : VARENICLINE

ABSTRACT -

Chantix is a drug used in de-addiction therapy procedures to enable smoking cessation. This medication is generally accompanied by behavioral therapy for effective cessation of smoking habits. Varenicline is clinically proven to decrease dependency on tobacco or smoking substances such as cigarettes.

DOSAGE –

    • Chantix is to be taken as directed by the doctors.
    • This drug is generally found in the form of an oral tablet, to be consumed with a whole glass of water.
    • The initial dosage of this drug is lower than the maintenance dose later taken over the course. Follow a doctor’s instructions closely to regulate the strength of each dose.
    • Medicine is accompanied by one of various approaches to quit or reduce smoking. Patient may quit smoking before or during the drug course.
    • General Adult Dosage available:
Oral tablet – 05mg (Initial dosage for about 7 days), 1mg (Maintenance dosage from day 8 to end of treatment)

SIDE EFFECTS –

  • Nausea

  • Change in taste
  • Headaches
  • Nightmares

RARE SIDE EFFECTS:

  • Seizures
  • Severe nausea
  • Sweating
  • Heart attacks
  • Chest pain or congestion
  • Mental health problems such as depression
  • Suicidal thoughts/behavior
  • Numbness
  • Sudden stroke
  • Somnambulism
  • Slurred speech
  • Loss of vision
  • Loss of motor co-ordination

DRUG INTERACTIONS –

  • Dolutegravir
  • Ethanol
  • Nicotine
  • Ranolazine
  • Vandetanib
Chantix has no major interactions with drugs, but has moderate interactions with 9 drugs.

PRECAUTIONS –

  • Provide the doctor with a detailed and accurate medical history prior to drug prescription. Notify the doctor especially in case of – mental health problems, suicidal tendencies, kidney problems, heart conditions, seizures or alcohol addiction.
  • Do not take this drug in case of an allergic reaction to the drug or in case of a history of skin reaction to certain drugs of similar nature.
  • Do not nurse while on drug course, as this drug may transfer through breast milk and cause seizures or vomiting to occur more often to the newborn child.
  • Avoid alcohol or other cessation drugs while consuming Chantix.

WARNINGS –

  • This drug may lead to depressive behavior or suicidal tendencies. Reach out for help in case of such developments.
  • Withdrawal symptoms may occur once the patient has quit smoking. This may include restlessness, depressive behavior, agitation, unusual heart palpitations, insomnia and the constant urge to smoke.
  • Keep out of reach of children. This drug is not approved for individuals under the age of 18.
  • In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.
