CYSTINE
Generic Name: CYSTINE
ABSTRACT -
Cystine is the oxidized disulfide dimer of cysteine and occurs naturally in proteins, where cystine bridges help stabilize protein structure. It is also relevant to nutrition and to cystinuria, a disorder in which poorly soluble cystine can form urinary stones.
DOSAGE -
No universal drug dosage applies. Dietary intake or supplement use should follow a product label or clinician advice. Patients with cystinuria or recurrent kidney stones should not self-supplement without specialist guidance.
SIDE EEFECTS -
- Nausea, abdominal discomfort, bloating, or diarrhea with oral supplements
- Unpleasant taste or odor in some preparations
- Potential worsening of cystine stone risk in susceptible patients
- Rare headache or mild skin symptoms
- Risk of imbalance if used with multiple amino-acid supplements
ALLERGIC REACTIONS -
(These symptoms may indicate an allergic reaction and require medical attention.)
- Rash, itching, or hives
- Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
- Wheezing, chest tightness, or trouble breathing
- Severe dizziness or fainting
DRUG INTERACTIONS-
- Urine alkalinizing agents, thiol-binding drugs, or cystinuria therapies can alter cystine solubility management
- Other amino-acid supplements may affect total sulfur amino-acid intake
- No major routine drug interactions are established for normal dietary cystine exposure
- Patients with kidney stone therapy should review all supplements with a clinician
PREAUTONS–
- Use caution in cystinuria, recurrent kidney stones, or impaired kidney function
- Maintain hydration and follow medical dietary advice if stone risk exists
- Do not substitute cystine supplements for prescribed cystinuria therapies
- Pregnancy and lactation supplement use should be clinician-guided
- Confirm whether a product contains cystine, cysteine, N-acetylcysteine, or another related compound
WARNINGS –
- Cystine is not a sedative, antibiotic, or anticancer drug
- Excessive or inappropriate supplementation may be harmful in cystinuria
- Seek care for flank pain, blood in urine, fever, or urinary obstruction symptoms
- Quality and regulatory status of dietary supplements vary by country
