FERROUS SULFATE

Generic Name : FERROUS SULFATE

ABSTRACT -

Ferrous Sulfate is used as an iron supplement to help the patients retrieve low levels of iron in blood which may be caused due to anemia or pregnancy. This medication helps to maintain good health because iron is a responsible mineral for making red blood cells in the body.

DOSAGE –

    • Ferrous Sulfate has to be taken as directed by the doctors.
    • Adult dosages:
Tablet: 600 mg per day for 3 months

SIDE EFFECTS –

  • Rashes
  • Discolored stools
  • Fecal impaction
  • Gastrointestinal irritation
  • Red and swollen skin
  • Wheezing
  • Tightness in the chest or throat
  • Black, tarry, or bloody stools
  • Fever
  • Tooth discoloration
  • Upset stomach
  • Unusual hoarseness
  • Nausea
  • Epigastric pain
  • Trouble breathing
  • Altered bowel habit
  • Diarrhea

RARE SIDE EFFECTS:

  • Belly pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Not feeling hungry
  • Upset stomach
  • Cramps
  • Constipation
  • Change in color of stool to green

DRUG INTERACTIONS –

  • Dolutegravir
  • Dimercaprol
Ferrous Sulfate has major interactions with 2 different drugs.

  • Ibandronate
  • Demeclocycline
  • Baloxavir marboxil
  • Rabeprazole
  • Trientine
Ferrous Sulfate has moderate interactions with 70 different drugs.

PRECAUTIONS –

  • This drug contains inactive ingredients which may result in allergic reactions. So a pharmacist must be consulted before consuming it. Patients having any kind of iron overload disorder should avoid taking this medicine.
  • It is of utmost necessity to discuss any medical history related to thalassemia, stomach ulcers, ulcerative colitis and regular blood transfusions.
  • In case the drug belongs to the brand containing folic acid, then the patient should inform the doctor any history of Vitamin B12 deficiency.
  • Diabetic and patients with liver disease should use this drug with caution as its liquid preparations contain sugar or alcohol.

PREGNANCY AND LACTATION WITH FERROUS SULFATE:

  • Use of Ferrous Sulfate in pregnancy may be acceptable only if the benefits exceed the risks involved.
  • Studies in animal pregnancy have shown adverse effects on fetus. But no adequate studies have been found in humans to access the damage involved.
  • Ferrous Sulfate transfers into breast milk. Preferable precautions must be taken during breast feeding.

WARNINGS –

  • The use of this drug is restricted if the patient being treated has hemochromatosis, hemosiderosis, or hemolytic anemia.
  • The medication is not to be administered in children under the age of 18.
  • Keep out of reach of children. In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.
