Battens disease
Battens disease is a progressive neurological disorder that affects children between the ages of 5 to 10. The disease is fatal and it grows worse over time. This disease is one of the group of disorders called neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCLs) Battens disease is caused by the accumulation of fatty substances called lipopigments in the brain, eye and CNS. It is also transmitted genetically if both the parents carry the disease in their genes. Common symptoms would be seizures, dementia and behavioural changes. The treatment to Battens lies undiscovered and hence other than a little medication, nothing can be used to relieve the patient. Having four types based on age of the patient, this disease leads to death.
