LARYNGITIS
ABSTRACT -
Laryngitis is an irritation and inflammation in voice box i.e. larynx, causes distortion of the voice as air passes through its vocal cords and the voice of an individual becomes grumpy. This condition can be acute or chronic, although it is for short-term and has no severe complications. It is generally triggered by a temporary viral infection or vocal strain.
CAUSES -
- Viral infections and irritation
- Strain in vocal area by yelling or overusing of voice
- Bacterial or fungal infections such as diphtheria
- Allergies caused by inhaling irritants
- Acid reflux called Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
- Constant sinusitis
- Anxiety
- Consumption of excessive alcohol
- Smoking
- Infection causing through parasites
- Cancer
- Vocal cord paralysis
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS –
- Gruffness
- Low or weak voice
- Rawness, sore or dry throat
- Dry cough
- Difficulties in speech delivery
- Fever
- Headache
- Recurrent throat clearing
- Fatigue and malaise
DIAGNOSIS –
- Laryngoscopy
- Biopsy
TREATMENT –
- Certain medications such as antibiotics, acetaminophens and corticosteroids
- Avoid decongestants
PREVENTION –
- Avoid smoking, alcohol and caffeine
- Have plenty of water
- Avoid consumption of spicy foods.
- Avoid clearance of throat which causes swelling
- Take extra care during respiratory infections such as cold or flu
- Avoid much talking and keep the throat moistened
- Don’t inhale irritants
- Use humidifier to breath in moist air
EPIDEMIOLOGY –
- It can affect people of any age but majorly occurs in the people with age range of 18-40 years.
- Since Laryngitis is a self-limiting condition, it is not usually reported and hence the figures of prevalence is unknown.
