MUMPS

ABSTRACT -

Mumps is a viral and contagious infection which affects salivary glands, located near the ear. In this condition, inflammation occurs in the salivary glands. People who are not vaccinated are more prone to get affected with this disease.

CAUSES -

  • Mumps virus, Paramyxovirus – Group of RNA viruses carrying agents of Mumps
  • Cough or sneezing droplets from an infected person
  • Sharing utensils with infected person
  • Low immunity

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS –

  • Swollen salivary glands results in bumpy cheeks
  • Localized pain especially while chewing and swallowing
  • Muscle pain
  • Fever
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fatigue

COMPLICATIONS –

  • Mumps may lead to swelling in some parts of the body. It can lead to complications like Encephalitis, Meningitis, Orchitis, Oophoritis and Pancreatitis.
  • Hearing problems
  • Miscarriage: Mumps during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage.

DIAGNOSIS –

  • Physical examination
  • Blood test
  • Urine test
  • Sample testing of saliva
  • Sample testing of CSF (Cerebrospinal Fluid) in severe cases

TREATMENT –

  • Pain killer or pain relieving medications
  • Non-Steroidal and Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs)

It cannot be treated with any anti-biotic or anti-viral medications. But symptoms can be relieved by following tips:

  • Drink more fluids except fruit juices which stimulates saliva production.
  • Place something cold on the swollen area to reduce the pain
  • Gargle with warm and salt water

PREVENTIONS –

  • MMR Vaccine
  • Cover nose and mouth with handkerchief or cloth while sneezing or coughing

EPIDEMIOLOGY –

  • It’s a global disorder where young children and adolescents are more prone to get affected with Mumps.
