RABIES
ABSTRACT -
Rabies is a fatal viral infection that spreads from the infected animal’s saliva. Rabies virus affects the central nervous system which gets transmitted by the bite or scratch of animal.
CAUSES -
- Rabies virus from mammals and pets
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS –
- Fever and headache
- Nausea and vomiting
- Agitation or anxiety
- Confusion
- Hyperactivity
- Difficulty in swallowing
- Extreme salivation
- Hydrophobia
- Priapism
- Hallucinations and insomnia
- Paralysis, involuntary muscle twitching
DIAGNOSIS –
- Lab Test
- Skin biopsy
TREATMENT –
There is no specific treatment but the following series of shot can be helpful.
- Rabies shots: Fast acting immune globulin dose immediately after the bite and a series of Rabies vaccines for 2-4 weeks.
PREVENTION –
- Rabies vaccination at childhood
- Regular vaccination to pets and domestic animals
- Restrain pets from coming in contact with wild animals
- Small pets should be protected from predators
- Inform about stray animals to local authorities
- Stay away from wild animals
- Bats should be kept away from home
EPIDEMIOLOGY –
- The global records show that every year, around 59,000 people dies from this disease every year out of which major are children.
- All the mammals are vulnerable to infection especially dogs in developing countries.
