RESTLESS LEGS SYNDROME
ABSTRACT -
Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is a disorder that causes nervousness and impatient urge to move the legs because of a feeling of discomfort. It generally happens due to mental or physical problems which can be severe or mild.
Types –- Primary or Idiopathic RLS
- Secondary RLS
CAUSES -
- Hereditary factors
- Pregnancy
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS –
- Loss of minerals or vitamins
- Lack of sleep resulting in uneasiness and discomfort
- Change in the hormonal levels
- Sensitive personality and stress
- Insomnia leads to mood swings, depression and low immune system
- Nighttime leg jerking
- Sensational feelings of crawling, creeping, pulling, throbbing in the legs
- Other physical and health related issues
DIAGNOSIS –
- Physical and neurological examination
- Blood test for iron deficiency
- Polysomnography
TREATMENT –
- Medications such as muscle relaxants, pain killers, Anticonvulsants etc.
RISK FACTORS –
- Peripheral Neuropathy
- Iron Deficiency
- Kidney Failure
- Spinal cord Conditions
EPIDEMIOLOGY –
- Global estimation shows that Restless Legs Syndrome prevalence fluctuates between 3.9% and14.3percent among general populations which increases with increasing age.
- 1 in 10 people gets affected from RLS once in their life time.
