RESTLESS LEGS SYNDROME

ABSTRACT -

Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is a disorder that causes nervousness and impatient urge to move the legs because of a feeling of discomfort. It generally happens due to mental or physical problems which can be severe or mild.

Types –
  • Primary or Idiopathic RLS
  • Secondary RLS

CAUSES -

  • Hereditary factors
  • Pregnancy
However, the causes remain unclear and unspecific most of the time.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS –

  • Loss of minerals or vitamins
  • Lack of sleep resulting in uneasiness and discomfort
  • Change in the hormonal levels
  • Sensitive personality and stress
  • Insomnia leads to mood swings, depression and low immune system
  • Nighttime leg jerking
  • Sensational feelings of crawling, creeping, pulling, throbbing in the legs
  • Other physical and health related issues

DIAGNOSIS –

  • Physical and neurological examination
  • Blood test for iron deficiency
  • Polysomnography

TREATMENT –

  • Medications such as muscle relaxants, pain killers, Anticonvulsants etc.

RISK FACTORS –

  • Peripheral Neuropathy
  • Iron Deficiency
  • Kidney Failure
  • Spinal cord Conditions

EPIDEMIOLOGY –

  • Global estimation shows that Restless Legs Syndrome prevalence fluctuates between 3.9% and14.3percent among general populations which increases with increasing age.
  • 1 in 10 people gets affected from RLS once in their life time.
