SEPSIS
ABSTRACT -
Sepsis is a life-threatening severe illness due to low immune response of body to bacterial infections which results in entering of bacteria directly into the blood. It can even damage or injure the organs. The strong immune system protects the body from several illnesses and infections whereas in this condition, the immune system starts attacking own healthy cells. It can lead to blood poisoning if not treated promptly.
CAUSES -
- Pneumonia
- Infections in the –
- Digestive System
- Urinary System
- Kidneys
- Abdomen and stomach
- Bacteremia: Bacterial presence in blood causing bloodstream infections
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS –
- High fever and chills
- Increase in the heart rate
- Prone to viral / microbial infections
- Excessive sweating
- Patches of pale skin
- Reduction in urine
- Variation in mental state
- Low platelet count
- Breathing issues
- Irregular heart function
- Unconsciousness, results in coma in severe cases
- Excess weakness
DIAGNOSIS –
- Physical examination
- Blood test
- Urine test
- Wound Secretion Test
- Mucus Secretion Test
- X-rays, CT Scans, Ultrasound and MRI Scans
TREATMENT –
- Medications such as antibiotics, painkillers, corticosteroids etc
- Surgery to remove infected tissues or gangrene
- Kidney Dialysis
PREVENTION –
- Vaccination for flu and pneumonia
- Clean wounds to avoid infections
- Maintain good hygiene
EPIDEMIOLOGY –
- Estimation shows that females are more prone to get affected from sepsis than males.
