TONSILLITIS
ABSTRACT -
Tonsillitis is swelling of the tonsils, two oval-shaped collections of lymphoid tissues, one tonsil on each side located at the back of the throat. Swelling makes the swallowing difficult. Tonsillitis is caused due to common viral or bacterial infection and gets cured within few days. Surgery is performed when it does not respond to any treatment and reoccurs frequently.
CAUSES -
- Streptococcus pyogenes Virus
- Bacterial infections
- Low immunity
- In contact with infected person
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS –
- Red and inflamed tonsils
- White, yellow or pus-filled patches on tonsils
- Fever
- Pain and difficulty while eating and swallowing
- Sore throat
- Pain in the ears and neck
- Coughing
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Bad breath
- Changes in voice
- Furry tongue
COMPLICATIONS –
- Obstructive Sleep Apnea
- Tonsillar Cellulitis
- Peritonsillar Abscess
- Strep Infection
DIAGNOSIS –
- Physical examination of throat and tonsils
- Throat swab
- Blood test
TREATMENT –
- Antibiotics
- Painkillers
- Surgery
RISK FACTORS –
- Frequent exposure to germs
- Low immunity
EPIDEMIOLOGY –
- Children between the ages of 5 to 15 years are more prone to get affected with Tonsillitis and it is more common in females as compared to males.
