TRICHOMONIASIS

ABSTRACT -

Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection that is caused by one celled protozoan (parasite) which travels from one person to another during sexual intercourse. This condition does not show any symptom in males or females. There is no cure for this condition but treatment can reduce and control the symptoms as it can be life threatening if left untreated.

CAUSES -

  • One celled protozoan – a type of a parasite

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS –

In females:
  • Foul smell from vagina
  • Vaginal discharge
  • Pain during urination and sexual intercourse
In males:
  • Irritation in penis
  • Discharge from penis
  • Pain in urination and during sexual intercourse

COMPLICATIONS –

DIAGNOSIS –

TREATMENT –

  • Antibiotics

RISK FACTORS –

  • Unprotected sex
  • Multiple sex partners
  • Pre-existing sexually transmitted diseases
  • Infected pregnant woman can transmit the infection to the fetus

PREVENTION –

  • Abstain from sex
  • Use protection during intercourse

EPIDEMIOLOGY –

  • The study shows that the prevalence rate for Trichomoniasis is 248 million people worldwide.
  • 90% of the cases are caused directly by the parasite. 10% accounts for the infection caused due to transmission from others.
